Opportunities for Students

GET INVOLVED

The PI Lab offers a wide variety of opportunities for undergraduate students and recent graduates looking to gain research or clinical experience in the field of psychology.
Research Opportunities
The PI Lab is involved with a diverse array of research projects. Some of these include thesis and dissertation studies run by the graduate students, but others involve federal-grant funded projects. Our URAs have the opportunity to invest themselves in those projects that most interest them and align with their long-term goals or to garner experience across the gamut and contribute to numerous activities with the PI Lab.
Responsibilities are typically assigned in a hierarchical fashion. New URAs may start doing data entry, verification, chart preparations, or assisting with efforts to recruit participants. Students who demonstrate dependability,  initiative, and a strong work ethic might be invited to shadow IRB protocol development, participate in study design, get training on assessment procedures, and even get experience with client interaction.
Through their involvement in these capacities, URAs can be asked to collaborate on conference posters and presentations, as well as journal manuscripts for submission. For students looking to apply for advanced degrees, these can be invaluable additions toward a competitive resume.
If you are interested in working alongside the PI Lab, please complete the form on the right. We hope to hear from you!
Clinical Opportunities
In addition to the research conducted through the lab, the PI Lab is also affiliated with multiple sites that offer treatment and assessment services to families in the community, including the Child Assessment Clinic, the Psychological Services Center, and the Virginia Tech Autism Clinic. We also offer opportunities for our URAs who have an interest in pursuing clinical experience to get involved. Students working with one of our clinics are responsible for preparing client charts, entering and verifying data, scoring instruments. They also provide child care when needed and assist with assessments (e.g., running children through computerized tasks and working one-on-one with them to complete questionnaires). We also invite our URAs to sit in on staffing meetings and get exposure with differential diagnoses and case presentations. URAs who demonstrate strong performance and go above and beyond can even receive training in the administration of formal clinical interviewing and other testing procedures.
